2004 Hunting Season Thank you Jim and Mary and John and Jeanie! When hunting in midwestern states a person is dependent on the generosity of landowners. Friends and extended family in N.E. Iowa have been a gift to us as we learn this new passion of turkey hunting. Getting our birds is only a small part of the joy that we get to share during the week of our hunt; all of which would not happen without your willingness to let us hunt on your land...Thank You!

Boise * Huns and Chukar and Z's first retrieve The best day of the year! A limit of chukar? No. A limit of Huns? No. Just 3 Huns in the bag and lots of missed shots but it was a day for Zealot to shine. To understand my excitement you first need to understand the frustration of the first half of the hunting season. My 2-year-old shorthair that runs like a field trial dog spent a good portion of the first 2 months hunting on her own, not paying much attention to the supposed partnership we were meant to be enjoying in the field. With a chuckle I looked up from pulling on a hip wader and simply replied, “Yep”. The truck had just pulled up and the hunter in it had moved around to his passenger door and was pulling out his own set of hip waders as he asked the question. Although cordial in his tone, the thoughts in his head were written plainly in his expression, “Dang it, I’m not the only/first one today!” CLICK HERE to see the rest of the Island Hopping story. The difference was by the time I had neared the end of the loop last year I had my limit, this year there were 2 birds in the bag. The dogs were hot, even though it was still before 9 a.m., so I was watering the dogs and giving them and me a rest. The view of Boise and the foothills was great. As I sat there and scanned the area to the west I noticed that the plantings in last years burned area had taken off…and there was a lot of sunflower! With a slight nod to myself and a half-smile I was hopingI figured out the mystery of the missing birds.
