I know we're in the middle of chukar season here, but I just found out today that I was drawn for a Southern AZ Gould's tag for next Spring. I have been putting in for 7 years. Super excited even though the hunt is five months away!

What a gorgeous bird. I hope you plan on getting your tom mounted...as I'll just assume you are going to bust a big bird!

Well, I arrived in AZ a little later than I had hoped and conditions were tough as I feared they might be. To make a long story short, I was up at 3:30am and on gobblers each morning, but couldn't get any to come into range. It was hot with highs in the mid-90s and the birds were quiet by 6am each day. Between the terrain, the heat, and almost stepping on a Mojave rattlesnake the first afternoon, it felt strange to be turkey hunting.

Finally on the fifth morning I happened to be in the right spot just before sunrise and this tom silently strutted in a little too close to the wrong tree.

At 19lbs with a 8 1/2" beard, he wasn't the best trophy gobbler down there I'm sure, but I feel very fortunate to have harvested a bird under the circumstances let alone draw a tag in the first place. Beautiful country and a challenging hunt.

(Btw, that first photo I linked to originally was taken by one of the guys on the AZ forum who killed a nice tom 2 years ago in the same unit.)

CONGRATS! What a trophy. As I assumed with my first post you busted a good one.
